SIRFI Immigrant Integration News

February 2010

Dear All

Although most of us have escaped the big snowstorms that have hit the East coast (o.k., Durango has hung in there with some big snow events), we may see a flurry of discussion regarding immigration this year.  President Obama only gave comprehensive immigration reform 38 words in his State of the Union address, but groups are rallying around the country to push the issue forward.

We'll need to keep each other up to date on developments as they happen and network resources and strategies for successful communication and outreach.  Every community will be impacted differently and respond according to their own environment and leadership, but we can all learn and support each other if we find ourselves with increasing hostility as we've seen in the past.  Please share your resources and strategies as they unfold.

Joe recommends accessing "Raising the Floor for American Workers -The Economic Benefits of Comprehensive Immigration Reform", . It's a tremendous resource and does a wonderful job of providing an economic overview of the benefits of CIR.  He recently presented the findings to a very conservative group at a local VFW.  The participants said they found the information useful and it helped establish a very positive and worthwhile exchange of ideas.  Joe is happy to share his PowerPoint and notes.

Thanks for all your contributions this month and keep them coming!

One Community of Montrose/Delta welcomed their new Resource Coordinator, Criselda Gutierrez. Many had the opportunity to meet her at the SIRFI conference in Alamosa last fall.  She also attended the Immigration Conference at Mesa State in Grand Junction.  She has been volunteering with various aspects of the project since early 2009.  Her family comes from Corpus Christi, Texas, and she has lived in many parts of the country, including Hawaii.  Criselda has two grown children and three grandchildren.

Risking Connection in Faith Communities Training

Sidran Institute:  "A new  trauma curriculum is available for use by pastors, rabbis, priests, imams, and religious or lay leaders.  Called "Risking Connection in Faith Communities" it is designed to help clergy understand the nature of psychological trauma, how it affects people, and how faith leaders can help trauma survivors in their congregations.  Particular attention is paid to the spiritual impact of trauma."   Thank you Myrna Ann for sharing this resource.

Education

COREChicano Organizing & Research in Education
(CORE) is proud to present their second annual "Que Llueva Café" scholarship. The goal of the scholarship is to provide financial assistance to college-bound, undocumented, Latino students. We seek to support undocumented students that have met the rigorous academic requirements asked of them and hold the academic promise to achieve so much more. Please review the scholarship instructions for specific eligibility requirements.

Thank you Denver Coalition for Integration for promoting this oppportunity.
Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition

A New Parent Information and Resource Center: "Parent involvement is the key that opens the door for the children's success in school. The Colorado Statewide Parent Coalition has believed this and for over 26 years has worked to assure that parents are provided with the tools that they need to help their children be successful in school."  Publications include: "Engaging Mexican Immigrant Parents".

Parent Conference 2010 (5/14-5/16) is now open for registration.

Immigrants and health care

New Routes Health care professionals include immigrants: A study by the Migration Policy Institute (MPI) indicates that migrants represent 20 percent of health care professionals working in the United States. As reported by La Opinión, one in four doctors was born abroad and one in five nurses, psychiatrists and support personnel are immigrants. Walter Edwin, a chief investigator at MPI told the daily that migrants are not only health care consumers but also providers whose issues shouldn't
be left out of the immigration debate.

Moving to the Land of Milk and Cookies: Obesity among the Children of Immigrants: "In a new study funded by the Foundation for Child Development, the Migration Information Source used a large, nationally representative sample to document the prevalence and patterns of obesity among young children of immigrants. They discovered that children of newly arrived immigrants are particularly vulnerable to this growing health problem".
Media

queen noorFaces of America: "What made America? What makes us? These two questions are at the heart of the new PBS series Faces of America with Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The Harvard scholar turns to the latest tools of genealogy and genetics to explore the family histories of 12 renowned Americans".

Joe reports that the first episode which aired last night was really engaging and touched upon most of the work we do with SIRFI Immigrant Integration.  The sell is pretty "soft" and perhaps that's a good approach to engage some of the more resistant of our community members. Check out your local PBS station for future airings.   We have pre-ordered the DVD for use by grantees and community and we'll let you know when it's available.
Campaigns/Reform

Take Action to Support Colorado's Range Workers: "Because of the way current law is written, Colorado 's range workers often make less than minimum wage and labor in unsafe conditions. Most range workers are here on guest worker visas under the H2-A program. They arrive already in debt and are afraid to complain for fear of being deported. Many are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and make as little as $2-3 per hour. Many do not have access to their passport, visa, driver's license or other important paper work, so cannot even leave their workplace. They are isolated without access to a bank account or even a telephone. This is an unacceptable situation - range workers should be treated just as decently as any other worker in Colorado ."

angelThe Power of the Latino Vote in the 2010 Elections: "The Latino vote has grown exponentially since 2000, changing the political landscape in more than a dozen states across the country, and is poised to be pivotal yet again in the 2010 cycle.  According to experts on the politics of the Latino vote, who gathered on a telephonic press conference today, candidates and parties need to do more than say a few words in Spanish-they need to understand and embrace the policies that motivate and influence Latino voters.  How both parties handle such issues as comprehensive immigration reform will have a real impact on Latino political behavior, including turnout and party preference, in the congressional mid-terms and beyond.

Immigrants Claim Wal-Mart Fired Them to Provide Jobs for Local Residents
: "A small group of West African men who came to the Rockies in search of economic opportunity are embroiled in a dispute with Wal-Mart, accusing it of a raft of discriminatory actions. Most say they were dismissed because supervisors wanted to give their jobs to local people in need of work."

Evangelicals Call for Immigration Reform: Colorado Matters on 2/3  (Public Radio)- "Churches have long advocated for changes to the immigration system. Evangelicals in Colorado recently added their voices. Ryan Warner talks to Mike Harrison of Bethany Evangelical Free Church in Littleton and Daniel Carroll Rodas of Denver Seminary".

We were graciously hosted by Mike at his church for our Coordinator's meeting in 2008.  Take the time to listen to Mike share his story of how his church is "melding" with a new Hispanic congregation, how they are overcoming language barriers and how Anglo and Hispanic congregants learn when they engage in conversation and dialogue.  A fantastic example of building bridging social capital!
